Giving back in his golden years

This Volunteers’ Week (2–6 June), the Dogs Trust is celebrating the incredible contributions of its 3,800 volunteers across 22 rehoming centres.  At Dogs Trust Manchester, special recognition is going to Jeff, one of the charity’s oldest volunteers, for his unwavering dedication and support.

After losing his beloved dog Jack to a tumour last year, this devoted dog lover found a new purpose. When he brought all of Jack's things and belongings to Dogs Trust Manchester for donation, it sparked the idea to give back.

Now, he has become a much-loved member of Dogs Trust Manchester and spends an afternoon each week at the rehoming centre bringing joy and companionship to the dogs waiting to find their forever homes. He looks forward to helping, whether taking them for a walk, playing with them in the exercise compound, or offering a treat and gentle company.

Jeff said: "I've had four rescue dogs throughout my life, and they've given me so much, this is my way of giving back. You get as much pleasure as the dogs do; it's a two-way thing."

Volunteering for just over a year, Jeff is also a familiar face at the centre's coffee mornings, often joined by his family, who lend a helping hand. Although he’s no longer able to have a dog of his own, Jeff says volunteering fills that gap and gives him the companionship he cherishes.

Lisa Eardley, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Manchester, said: "Jeff is a real inspiration to the team, who proves that volunteering benefits not only the dogs but the people, too. His warmth, dedication and love for our four-legged friends is felt throughout the centre every time he visits, and they absolutely adore him.”

Jeff's journey is a heartwarming reminder that the power of volunteering has no age limit and that the bond between people and dogs is timeless.
