Gamesley pupils graduate from prestigious scholars programme

A group of eleven pupils from Gamesley Primary School, have graduated from ‘The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme’ following a special ceremony held at Manchester University.

The pupils, selected from Year 5 and Year 6 for their high levels of academic potential, spent four months working with a university lecturer as part of the national initiative, which aims to widen access to higher education by giving school aged children a taste of university style learning. The programme introduces pupils to advanced academic concepts, supports them in developing analytical skills, and culminates in a final 1000 word assignment marked using genuine undergraduate criteria. 

During the course, the children produced a series of extended essays and took part in small group tutorials designed to stretch their thinking. All pupils achieved impressive results, with one participant, Lucas, having his final assignment put forward for potential publication, an exceptional accomplishment for a primary aged student. 

Emma Brown, the teacher overseeing the programme, said the impact on pupils had been clear. “Their confidence has grown enormously. They’ve learned to approach complex ideas with real independence, and we’re already seeing the benefits in their day‑to‑day schoolwork. This experience has shown them what they’re capable of.” 

The graduation event at Manchester University included a campus tour and a formal certificate presentation, offering pupils a glimpse into university life and the academic opportunities that may lie ahead. 

One of the young scholars, Natasha, delivered a speech during the ceremony, an experience she described as transformative. “Speaking at the university made me feel really confident,” she said. “I’m excited about my future now. I want to go to university one day and study art.” 

The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme continues to grow nationally, with increasing numbers of pupils taking part each year. For this group of young graduates, the ceremony marked not just the end of a project, but the beginning of new ambitions.
