Future of Glossop Heritage Weekend at risk despite record crowds

Organisers of this year's hugely successful Glossop Heritage Weekend have issued a plea for support, after sharing that the event has only just broken even and will need financial support if it is to be held again.

The three-day celebration, which took place from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st May, attracted an estimated 20,000 visitors to the town and has since been widely praised for its packed programme of quality entertainment, variety of heritage attractions and excellent organisation.

However, despite the large crowds, the Glossop and District Round Table says rising costs, lower than expected sponsorship income and reduced programme sales mean the event is currently in jeopardy.

Round Table member Councillor Edward Siddall said organisers were delighted by the public response to the event, but concerned about what the financial outcome could mean for its future.

"We've had an incredible weekend and the feedback has been fantastic" he said. "The town was buzzing and thousands of people came to enjoy everything that was on offer. But events of this size cost a huge amount of money to put on.”

Edward shared that the event cost around £40,000 to put on, with significant expenses including first aid cover, road closures, staging, PA equipment, entertainment and vehicle hire costs.

He explained that while the Round Table has a small reserve, that fund is intended to support local charities and community projects rather than subsidise this major event.

"We can't dip into our community fund" he said. “The Glossop Heritage Weekend needs to be able to stand on its own feet if it's going to continue."

The impressive event takes place every two years, with the next event scheduled for 2028. However, organisers say its future is at real risk if additional support cannot be secured.

The Round Table is now appealing to local businesses that benefited from the influx of visitors to the town to consider making a donation towards the event if they have not already done so.

Edward praised the many businesses and organisations that have already sponsored and supported the weekend, helping make it possible: "We're incredibly grateful to everyone who backed us" he said. "We'd love those businesses that enjoyed a busy weekend because of the extra footfall to consider supporting us too. Even small contributions can make a real difference and help secure the future of the event."

He added that residents who enjoyed the weekend and would like to see it return can also make donations.

"If everybody who came along gave a small amount, it would make a huge difference," he said. "This event belongs to the whole community and we'd love people to help us keep it going."

The appeal comes as long-serving organiser Paul Hitchen prepares to step down from his role after years of leading the Heritage Weekend.

Organisers are now seeking new volunteers willing to help plan and coordinate future events.

"Paul has put an enormous amount of time and effort into making Heritage Weekend what it is today" said Edward. "We're incredibly grateful for everything he has done. But we now need new people to come forward with the enthusiasm and commitment to help take the event forward."

Anyone interested in supporting the Heritage Weekend through sponsorship, donations or volunteering is encouraged to contact Glossop and District Round Table through its Facebook page.

Edward added: "We want to keep building on what has been a fantastic event for the town. The support of local businesses, residents and volunteers will be crucial in making sure the Glossop Heritage Weekend returns bigger and better in 2028."
