Flood forces school closure

St Charles’ Catholic Voluntary Academy in Hadfield was forced to remain closed to pupils following severe flooding discovered after the Christmas holidays.

The school, on The Carriage Drive in Hadfield, confirmed that it was unable to open on Monday 5 January after a collapsed ceiling led to significant flooding on the premises.

In an update shared with parents on its Facebook page, the school said it had no option but to close immediately to ensure the safety of pupils and staff. Further damage was then discovered as frozen water pipes began to thaw.

On Tuesday 6 January, the school announced it would remain closed for the rest of the week due to the extent of the damage, including a lack of heating and running water. During the closure, pupils were provided with online learning via the Seesaw platform to minimise disruption to education.

Dedicated staff worked throughout the week to make the building safe, and on Friday 9 January the school confirmed it would be able to reopen the following Monday.

In a message to parents, the school paid tribute to local tradespeople for their efforts, describing plumber Jason Cooper and his son, along with Phase Electric, as “absolute heroes” for their work in restoring essential services and making the building safe.

While further repairs are still required, the school said it has rearranged classrooms and will make use of the school hall to allow pupils to return. Parents were thanked for their patience, understanding and support during the disruption.

The school is expected to continue repair work alongside normal lessons as it returns to full operation.
