Drums, dance and DJ delight at Hadfield Infants

Hadfield Infant School pupils enjoying the colourful carnival parade

Hadfield Infants School have brought music and creativity to the classroom with a vibrant themed week.

To coincide with GlossFest, held recently in Norfolk Square, the school decided to hold their own music week choosing ‘Carnival’ as the theme. The celebration of music, which was packed with special events and activities, culminated in a colourful parade on the final day.

Headteacher Francesca Dodd explained the inspiration behind the event: “Our vision is to be at the heart of the community, and when one of our parents who was helping to organise GlossFest, suggested we hold our own music event, we jumped at the idea.

"It’s all about giving our children rich, hands-on experiences that help them learn and grow, so throughout the week we have exposed them to a variety of musical genres.”

The week started with an engaging South American drumming workshop, where pupils explored rhythm, beat, and performance. This was followed by an energetic outdoor rave, hosted by a grandparent who is a DJ. Another musical highlight came from a talented parent who performed live with his guitar.

Mrs Dodd was thankful of the input from families: “We are so lucky to be able to share these experiences with our children.”

Each class was assigned a colour and a theme based on the school’s core values, such as teamwork, honesty, and courage. Dance coach Lucy worked with them throughout the week, teaching dances inspired by the themes and set to a variety of musical styles.

Parents and carers were invited to watch children showcase their dances during the final parade in the playground. Children wore plain white shirts which were splashed with vibrant, safe paint, with staff joining in the fun too.

One parent captured the spirit of the event perfectly, saying: “It’s been so educational, but also so much fun!”

In addition to Music Week, the school also welcomed darts champion Nathan Aspinall to celebrate National Numeracy Day. Nathan visited as part of the Professional Darts Corporation’s ‘Bullseye Maths’ initiative - a new campaign aimed at boosting numeracy skills in Key Stage 2 pupils.
