Derbyshire County Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukrainian refugees by allocating £2.16 million in government funding to district and borough councils across the county.
The decision, approved by Cabinet Members, will help strengthen local services and provide continued assistance to those who have fled the war.
Since the launch of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, more than 1,700 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Derbyshire following Russia’s invasion. Around 1,400 guests remain in the county, with approximately 150 new arrivals expected each year. Many continue to live with the county’s 280 host households, while others have moved into private rented accommodation.
The funding will be used to support refugees in several key areas, including helping them find employment, access local services and secure long-term housing. The aim is to ensure that those settling in Derbyshire can rebuild their lives and move towards independence.
Councillor Dawn Abbott, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, said: “It’s important that we continue to receive and distribute funding to support Ukrainian guests who have experienced huge trauma and upheaval, supporting our commitment to create empowered communities where people live safe, happy, healthy and independent lives. I’d like to thank host households across the county for their continued support in providing safe and secure homes for those in need.”
The council says the funding reflects both the generosity of Derbyshire residents and the ongoing need to support individuals and families displaced by the conflict.
