To celebrate National Numeracy Day, darting sensation Nathan Aspinall paid a visit to Hadfield Infant School as part of the Bullseye Maths initiative.
Set up by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), the programme aims to improve numeracy skills in children through darts.
‘The Asp’ put the children through their paces throughout the day, hosting two sessions with students aged between six and seven, including Aspinall’s daughter, Milly, who attends the school.
“It’s been really fun,” the 2023 World Matchplay champion told the Chronicle.
“When I was younger nothing like this even existed, and it just shows how far the sport has come over the past few years.
“Maths was my favourite subject at school and it’s obviously so important in darts, so it’s played a big part in my life.
“Hopefully the kids have enjoyed themselves today and possibly learnt something new.”
The deputy headteacher at Hadfield Infant School, Beverley Kidd, said: “The children have been so excited today, and it’s been a great atmosphere.
“Darts is one of the biggest up-and-coming sports, so for students to get out of the classroom and learn about maths in a really meaningful real-life setting is a wonderful opportunity.
“I’m really proud of our pupils, they’re the youngest group to take part in one of these sessions across the country, and they’ve done so well.”
The Stockport born star, who now resides in Dinting, is preparing for the final regular night of the Premier League Darts season which takes place on Thursday in Sheffield.
Should the 33-year-old defeat seven-time winner Michael van Gerwen in his quarter-final tie, he will progress to the final four of the competition.
“For me the Premier League lineup this year is the strongest it’s ever been,” Aspinall told the Chronicle.
“So if I was to finish in the top 4 after what has been a very tough and gruelling season, I’d be very proud.”
