Old Glossop residents rolled up their sleeves once again this weekend in a heartening display of community spirit.
The planned stream clean had to be postponed by a day after Storm Claudia transformed the usually gentle brook on Wesley Street into a roaring torrent on Saturday, but that didn’t deter volunteers from turning out in force.
On Saturday morning, residents made productive use of the time by cutting back trees, shrubs, and undergrowth in the Wellgate car park, following the recent removal of a run-down caravan that locals had campaigned to have removed for over four years. They also cleared gullies and swept up leaves from the nearby roads, keeping the village looking tidy and safe.

Volunteers were back out early on Sunday, this time focusing on the stream itself. Working along Wesley Street, they cleared debris washed down by the storm, trimmed overgrown vegetation, and helped restore the brook’s natural flow.

Explaining the importance of the annual clean, Janet Bingham from OGRA said:
“During the summer there’s been a build-up of vegetation impeding the flow of the stream. Cutting it back and clearing it will help prevent the brook from overflowing or flooding in heavy rain. Not only does this help the brook to run freely, but come late spring, the banks will be filled with beautiful wildflowers, encouraging bees and other insects. Spending just a couple of hours for one day benefits the whole community for the year.”
By Sunday afternoon, the banks were cleared, the water running freely once more, and the storm debris removed - all thanks to dozens of neighbours giving up their time.
Organisers described it as “a marvellous community effort” - one that will benefit Old Glossop long after the wellies are washed and put away.
