Celebrating 20 years of helping people living with chronic conditions

The High Peak Fibromyalgia and MECFS Support Group with High Peak Mayor Barbara Hastings-Asatourian.

A support group for people living with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of friendship, understanding and peer support in the High Peak.

High Peak Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS Support marked the milestone on Thursday, 8th October at Glossop North End Community Hub, where members meet on the second Thursday of each month.

The group was established in October 2006 by High Peak CVS, following a request from founder Iris Richards. Since then, it has provided a welcoming space for people with the conditions to share experiences, offer encouragement and find support from others who understand the challenges they face.

Run entirely by volunteers, the group does not offer medical advice but provides a listening ear, empathy and companionship to those who need it.

Over the years, members have welcomed a variety of guest speakers, covering subjects ranging from holistic approaches and alternative ideas to wider topics offering a welcome distraction. The group also maintains a library of books covering different aspects of fibromyalgia and ME/CFS for members to borrow.

Its continued success has been made possible through the dedication of committee members and volunteers over the years, alongside funding secured through various projects. This has also enabled the group to organise occasional outings for members.

The group is open to anyone living with fibromyalgia or ME/CFS, with some members referred by their GP.

As it looks to the future, the group is keen to welcome new members and ensure its support continues for years to come.

Meetings take place at Glossop North End Community Hub from 1pm to 3pm on the second Thursday of each month. Anyone living with either condition is encouraged to drop in for a cuppa, a chat and the chance to find out more.

Members say the group has become a safe and informal space where many lasting friendships have been formed. Alongside the understanding and mutual support, there is also plenty of laughter.

After 20 years, its message remains simple: nobody should have to face these challenges alone.
