The Cinnamon Trust, the national charity that helps elderly and terminally ill people care for their pets, is appealing for volunteers to lend a hand (and a lead!).
One local resident in Tintwistle is currently in need of support with their delightful dog, who would love to go for a short walk. However, the charity doesn’t have enough volunteers in the area to help and are hoping that local animal lovers might step forward to ensure both owner and pet can continue enjoying life together.
The Cinnamon Trust offers free pet care assistance to people over 65 and to those in the latter stages of a terminal illness. Many elderly or unwell pet owners worry about how they will continue to look after their beloved companions – sometimes even considering rehoming them. That’s where the Trust’s volunteers step in to provide reassurance and practical support.
Volunteers help in whatever ways suit them best. Teams take turns visiting housebound owners to walk their dogs, while others foster pets when owners face a spell in hospital or respite care. Some volunteers help by taking pets to the vet or even by cleaning budgie cages and cat litter trays.
“We aim to keep owner and pet together for as long as possible with the help of a network of volunteers who offer free assistance when day-to-day care poses a problem” says a spokesperson for the charity. “For many people, their pet is their closest - and sometimes only - companion. We’re here to relieve their worries and make sure they don’t have to say goodbye just because daily care becomes difficult.”
Volunteers can offer as much or as little time as they wish. The Trust also provides lifelong guardianship for pets whose owners pass away or move into residential care, ensuring that no animal is ever left without love or security. The charity covers veterinary fees, holiday care and ongoing support for these pets.
