Boxing legend lit up the world... and Glossop

Ricky Hatton switched on Glossop Christmas Lights on a cold November night in 2006 in front of hundreds of people in Norfolk Square.

The Chronicle had carried a story the previous week of the world-famous fighter’s guest appearance and the town centre was packed as fans poured in from neighbouring towns.

Ricky was accompanied by a television crew, which at the time was filming a series titled ‘At Home With The Hattons’.

What was simply called the ‘Christmas Lights Switch-On’ was an annual event organised by a small committee of councillors and members of the public.

There was a giant fun fair, stalls, live music food and drink outlets, Father Christmas - and a beaming Ricky.

The highlight of the evening came when a guest celebrity climbed onto a stage to push a button to light up a giant Christmas tree in front of the War Memorial.

There were always cheers when the celebrity pressed the switch, but when a smiling Ricky arrived waving to the huge crowds, the noise was tumultuous.
