To celebrate the 'Year of Reading', Whitfield St James’ is encouraging people to discover the joy of books through a community-wide book hunt.
As part of the initiative, book packets have been hidden in various locations around Glossop, each containing a book ready to be read and be shared. Residents who find a book are invited to take it home, enjoy reading it, write their name inside the front cover, and then hide it again for the next reader to discover.
The project aims to spark curiosity, encourage reading for pleasure, and show how stories can connect people of all ages across the community. By signing their names, readers will be able to see how many people have enjoyed each book as it travels around the community.
Whitfield St James’ is also inviting families to share their reading experiences online. Anyone who finds and reads a book can tag Whitfield St James’ on X, Instagram, or Facebook, helping to spread the message and celebrate community reading.

“We love reading at Whitfield St James’ and we wanted to share that passion with Glossop” explained Executive Headteacher Craig Woodward. “This project is about bringing people together through books and seeing how far a story can travel.”
The initiative is open to readers of all ages and will continue throughout the Year of Reading.
