On Saturday 13th September, football returned to Melandra Park for the first time in nine years as Gamesley FC proudly unveiled their new facility.
To mark the occasion, the club welcomed a very special guest to cut the ribbon - 91-year-old football legend Daniel Jenkins.
A former Blackburn Rovers player in his youth and long-time coach, Daniel moved to Glossop in 1973 and went on to coach at Glossop Villa, Hollingworth, and most notably Gamesley Villa. Alongside close friend Peter Aldred, he led the U15s to a remarkable decade of trophy-winning seasons.
“Dan is a true local hero” said a club spokesperson. “He helped build the foundation of youth football in this area. We couldn’t think of a better person to open our new chapter.”
Still sharp and full of stories from a life in football, Daniel cut the ribbon to great applause - a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to both the game and the community.
Tom Burns, Gamesley FC chairman and manager (photo below), reflected on the milestone: “Saturday was a huge milestone for me - seeing Gamesley FC back in action was incredible. The return of football has brought so much joy and excitement to the community, and it’s amazing to feel the buzz around the estate again. As a child, my dad used to take me to watch Gamesley, and when I was old enough I played myself. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who worked so hard to bring our football club back.
“Looking ahead, what do I want for the future of Gamesley FC? Starting next season, thanks to the huge interest, we’ll have a men’s first team, a reserve team and a youth team. In time, we plan to introduce multiple kids’ teams - from mini-soccer and junior sides to youth squads - as well as girls’ teams. Football is for everyone, and with dedication and teamwork, I truly believe we can achieve anything.”
The day also supported Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, there was a five-round darts competition, family games, and a tombola raising funds for LET’s - a mental health support group based at Gamesley Community Centre.
Helen Thornhill, Move More Lead and chief officer of Gamesley Community Group, said: “I am so proud that all our hard work has created these opportunities for the residents to enjoy their community football team and make use of this fabulous community centre. We have a vision of an inclusive thriving hub which will bring the community of Gamesley together to celebrate their spirit, ensure reduction in isolation and give them the space to rekindle old friendships and form new ones. This vision is growing and our ambitions are reaching new heights!
“Today we had children as young as one mixing with young adults, families and older generations like Dan aged 91. They enjoyed the fun and joined in the laughter. I am working with partners to find funding opportunities to improve the sports facilities, which have sadly been neglected for many decades, and I’m optimistic that we can bring the attention to Gamesley to ensure there is investment into the football and other sports facilities, to give opportunities for residents to access a range of sports. Gamesley is a wonderful community and a great joy to be part of. I look forward to seeing many wonderful events in the coming months and years.”
Helen also added with a smile: “Can I let you into a secret… we have a big announcement next week, watch this space!”
