£600,000 green energy upgrade to begin at leisure centre

Work will start next week on a £600,000 project to reduce the carbon footprint of a New Mills leisure centre.

Contractors will arrive at MyActive on Hyde Bank Road on Monday morning, setting up their compound on the car park next to the swimming pool.

Funds for the green energy scheme come from a Sport England grant to upgrade plant room equipment and install solar panels on the roof.

High Peak Borough Council (HPBC) expects the renovations to last until mid-June, with the car park being closed until then.

Deputy Leader of HPBC, Cllr Damien Greenhalgh, who is also its Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure lead, said: "This important project will reduce the carbon emissions at the leisure centre and make a significant contribution to our net zero target. So, I'm pleased that we're now getting underway.

"The contractors will be on site from next week and I would ask people visiting the centre to bear this in mind when planning their visits.

“I'd also like to thank people in advance for their patience and co-operation whilst these essential works take place.

"Together with our colleagues at MyActive and the contractor, we'll be working with customers and local businesses to keep any future disruption to a minimum."

Suggestions from a public consultation on the redevelopment of MyActive New Mills are currently under discussion by the council.
