A local charity that’s been quietly transforming lives for nearly three decades continues to make a difference by turning unwanted furniture into fresh starts for families across Glossopdale and the High Peak.
Based in a warehouse on Pikes Lane, with a shop on George Street, the Glossopdale Furniture Project takes donations of furniture and household goods, selling some items affordably and giving others to people setting up home after a difficult time. “We basically provide furniture to those on low incomes or who are starting again after being homeless,” said manager Leigh, who has worked with the project for many years. “We help people live a bit more comfortably when they get that new home.”
Now approaching its 30th year, the charity has become a vital part of the local community, relying entirely on donations from residents across High Peak and parts of Tameside. “Our main source of income is the generosity of local people,” Leigh explained. “Continued support is what keeps us going.”

Assistant Manager, Sam.
But the project doesn’t just redistribute donated items, it’s also found inventive ways to reduce waste. In their on-site workshop, staff and volunteers breathe new life into materials that can’t be reused in their original form. “We break it down into raw materials and make brand new stuff,” Leigh said. “We do commissions and garden furniture like benches, planters and bird tables.”
Assistant manager Sam described a typical day that ranges from opening the shop front to answering donation enquiries. For him, the environmental impact is as rewarding as the social one. “Last year, we diverted roughly 150 tonnes of furniture from landfill,” he said. “It helps the community and the environment, and it feels good knowing we’re making a difference.”
Despite offering some of the lowest prices locally, the project remains sustainable thanks to the steady flow of donations. “We’re probably one of the cheapest places to buy furniture from,” Leigh added. “We try to keep everything affordable.” For anyone wishing to donate, there are several easy ways to get in touch.
The team regularly posts available items and news on their Facebook page, Glossopdale Furniture Project, while the project’s website offers a simple donation form.
