£1,500 boost to protect Glossop fish stocks

Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, has visited a historic fishing pond in Glossop after a local angling society received £1,500 in funding from the Environment Agency.

Romiley Anglers’ Society, which was founded in 1890, has received support from the Environment Agency over recent years to help maintain and improve its facilities.

This year, the society received a £1,500 grant towards the purchase of a new boat and Norfolk Reed. The new reed will help create fish havens, providing greater protection for fish stocks from predators such as cormorants.

Jon Pearce MP visited the pond alongside Howard Preen, Treasurer of Romiley Anglers’ Society, to see the site and hear more about the society’s work.

Jon Pearce MP said, “This really is a hidden gem here in Glossop. It is a lovely pond, surrounded by nature and with a huge amount of history behind it.

“Romiley Anglers’ Society has been around since 1890, and it is fantastic to see them getting Government support through the Environment Agency to help protect fish stocks and maintain this special place for the future.

“I was delighted to meet Howard and hear more about the work that goes on here. It is a great spot to visit, and I hope more people in the area will discover it and perhaps join become part of the society’s future.”
