Walkers step out for community spirit and fundraising success

On Sunday 28th June, fifty enthusiastic walkers set off on a sponsored walk that turned into a truly memorable community celebration.

Blessed with a wonderfully cooler day, a welcome relief after the intense heat earlier in the week, everyone enjoyed a refreshing and sociable journey through some of our area’s most scenic routes.

The event was formally opened at the Indian Community Centre on Union Road, where they were honoured by the presence of the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mark Llewellin. With warm words of encouragement, he cut the ribbon and sent the group off with great energy and goodwill. His support added dignity and significance to the occasion, and we extend our heartfelt thanks for his time and kindness.

From the Community Centre, walkers followed the peaceful path along the old railway track to Park Bridge, where they were welcomed with refreshments, a much-appreciated pause that allowed everyone to chat, laugh, and enjoy the surroundings. The route then continued towards Alexandra Park in Oldham, where the group settled down for a lively picnic.

Manhar Taylor the organiser added “Each participant received a picnic bag filled with Indian snacks, water, fruit and crisps, and judging by the smiles, conversations and shared laughter, the picnic was a highlight of the day. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and full of joy, with people connecting, joking and enjoying the simple pleasure of being outdoors together”

We are deeply grateful to Yvonne Witter, Chair of Peak District Mosaic, who travelled all the way from Sheffield by train to join us and show her support. Our thanks also go to Angela Robbin, Past President of Tameside Rotary, who represented Tameside Rotary with her usual enthusiasm and community spirit.

Special appreciation is extended to Manilal Mistry, whose generous donation of crisps added an extra treat to our picnic bags, and to Taraben Parmar and her dedicated kitchen staff, who prepared the delicious Indian snacks enjoyed by all.

The walk ran smoothly thanks to our wonderful team of marshals, whose care and vigilance ensured everyone’s safety throughout the day. And of course, heartfelt thanks to every participant, whose enthusiasm, positivity and camaraderie made the event truly unforgettable.

Funds raised from the walk will support Peak District Mosaic, helping them continue their vital work in connecting communities with outdoor activities and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and benefits of nature and all participants received a certificate for their effort.

This sponsored walk was more than a fundraiser, it was a celebration of community, friendship and shared purpose. A day to remember, and one that reflects the very best of what we can achieve together.
