Trust patient safety projects shortlisted for national healthcare awards

Three inspiring initiatives at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust have been shortlisted across four categories in this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

These prestigious awards celebrate the individuals and teams who are pushing forward new innovations and driving organisation-wide changes to improve patient care in the UK.

The Trust’s ‘Urology Improvement Project’ has been shortlisted in the Advancing Patient Safety with Data and Analytics category. With innovations such as consultant-led triage, improved access to primary care support, and the introduction of patient-initiated follow-up, this project has enhanced patient engagement and optimised delivery of the Trust’s Urology Service.

Meanwhile, the ‘Community Deteriorating Patient & Sepsis Programme’ is in the running for two awards this year: Deteriorating Patients and Rapid Response Initiative of the Year and Patient Safety Team of the Year. By implementing a community policy and new support pathways for community services, the programme has avoided hundreds of unnecessary hospital admissions and sped up transfer to the Emergency Department for those who need it.

Finally, the ‘District Nursing Virtual Assessment Safety Improvement Project’ is up for the Virtual or Remote Care Initiative of the Year award. The project supports staff to use virtual triage assessments safely and effectively, allowing them to process referrals from residential care homes to the District Nursing Service more efficiently. Patients are seen on first contact by a registered nurse, who can do a detailed assessment to support clinical decision making and assess the needs of the patient.

Trust Deputy Chief Executive Jonathan O'Brien OBE said, “I am delighted that we have been selected out of hundreds of other applicants as finalists in this year’s Patient Safety Awards. Each of these ambitious projects have led to real improvements in the services we provide for our patients. The teams behind these initiatives should be immensely proud of themselves.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Manchester on 15 September 2025.
