Tributes pour in for “much-loved” Ashton schoolboy after sudden cancer diagnosis

Haaris Ansari

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a “much-loved” 13-year-old boy from Ashton-under-Lyne who tragically died just weeks after being diagnosed with blood cancer.

Haaris Ansari’s family and friends were left stunned when he was diagnosed with leukaemia after falling unwell at the end of last month. Despite beginning chemotherapy treatment, Haaris developed an infection and sadly passed away on Saturday, March 14 - just a fortnight after his diagnosis.

A pupil at West Hill School in Stalybridge, Haaris was known for his bright personality and love of football. He was a devoted Manchester City fan and a valued player for local youth side Dukinfield Tigers, where he was a popular member of the Under-14s Stripes team.

In the days since his death, an outpouring of grief and support has flooded in from friends, teammates, coaches and the wider community.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Hamzah Mosque in Ashton on Monday to pay their respects at Haaris’ funeral, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.

Plans are now underway to honour his memory. Friends have organised a balloon release at Palace Road field in Ashton this Saturday at 4:30pm, where the community will come together to celebrate his life.

Meanwhile, one of Haaris’ coaches, Ciaran Henshaw, is calling on Manchester City and Arsenal fans to take part in a minute’s applause during the 13th minute of the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, in tribute to the young footballer.

In an emotional statement shared on social media, Dukinfield Tigers chairman Paul Heathcote said: “Dukinfield Tiger JFC are devastated to announce the passing of one of our own.

“Haaris Ansari was part of the U14’s Stripes team and was a hugely popular member of the group.

“Sadly, a number of weeks ago Haaris was diagnosed with leukaemia and sadly lost his battle last night.

“Haaris always had a huge smile on his face. He always encouraged his teammates and was a regular at our U14’s games supporting the lads from the sidelines when he wasn’t playing.

“Haaris loved tigers, he loved his teammates and loved his coaches.

“Tigers have lost one of their own today, and this has left a huge hole that will never be filled.

“A number of Haaris’s teammates and coaches will be attending his funeral tomorrow to pay our respects.

“His memory will live on forever.”

In a further show of support, one of Haaris’ best friends has set up a GoFundMe page to support his family, with all proceeds going directly to them. The club’s chairman has also made a significant personal donation.
