The family of 17-year-old Catherine Blackhurst have paid tribute to the 'intelligent young lady'.

An investigation was launched earlier this week following the death of a 17-year-old girl in Ashton-under-Lyne who had been reported missing.

Police enquiries led officers to an address on Whalley Close at around 9am on Sunday, 21 September, where emergency services were called. Despite their efforts, the girl was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification has taken place and officers can confirm the body of 17-year-old Catherine Blackhurst was discovered at the address. Catherine, who was reported missing on Saturday. Her family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

Following a Home Office Post Mortem, Catherine's cause of death remains unascertained at this time.

A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been bailed pending further enquiries. At this stage, detectives say the cause of death is still unclear and they are keeping an open mind.

In a tribute, Catherine's family said: “Cat was a bright, beautiful young woman with an infectious enthusiasm for life. She left an instant, lasting impression and anyone she met instantly fell in love with her larger-than-life personality. Her siblings loved her endlessly, they enjoyed special individual memories with her that will be cherished forever.

“We can’t put into words what Cat meant to us. She was so funny and smart. She accepted people for who they were with no judgement and was never afraid to be herself. If love was enough, she would be here with us right now celebrating.

“Cat was an intelligent young lady, so full of life and a can-do attitude to where she wanted to go in life, with the drive to achieve anything. She did so much in a short life, from gymnastics to chess tournaments, her apprenticeship in communications meant the world to her and she was a huge support to other children in care on social platforms.

“She had a love for her family and friends with a personality that everyone she met loved. As a family, we are immeasurably saddened with her passing and have so many special memories that will be cherished and talked about forever.

“We ask that our privacy is respected as we begin to process Cat’s passing and grieve as a family.”

Detective Chief Inspector Anna Barker said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young person who has tragically lost their life, who we sadly believe was missing Catherine.

"Although we have a man in custody, our investigation team is keeping an open mind and are following several lines of enquiry. A scene will remain in place while officers conduct their investigation. If you have any concerns, please speak to an officer who will listen to you.

"We are trying to get all the answers we can for the family of this young person who is at the forefront of the investigation team’s mind.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Whalley Close area on Saturday or in the early hours of Sunday morning to come forward with information.

DCI Barker added: “Every piece of information, no matter how small it might seem, helps us build a clearer picture in this investigation. Anyone who has any information, CCTV, mobile phone or Ring doorbell footage is urged to contact police.”
