Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have made thousands of arrests in the past year as part of a major crackdown on shoplifting and retail crime across the region.

In the 12 months to the end of summer, officers made 3,576 arrests for shoplifting offences – an average of almost 300 every month. The increase in enforcement has been matched by a significant rise in “positive outcomes,” meaning more crimes are being solved and offenders brought to justice.

During the same period, GMP recorded 840 fewer shoplifting crimes than the previous year and 1,400 more solved outcomes for the same offence. Across all types of retail crime, which includes robberies, burglaries, and related offences, there were over 1,300 additional solved cases compared to last year.

The improvements reflect a long-term trend of progress under the leadership of Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson, who took charge of GMP in 2021. Since then, the force has solved 4,500 more shoplifting offences than it did three years ago, a staggering 454.9% increase.

Neighbourhood policing teams continue to play a crucial role in supporting businesses and tackling offenders, both through everyday proactive work and through national initiatives such as Safer Business Action Week, which takes place this week.

The nationwide week of action focuses on reducing retail crime, targeting shoplifters, and providing businesses with practical crime prevention advice. Last year’s operation saw hundreds of arrests made across the country, and this year’s effort is expected to deliver further results.

Superintendent Cara Charlesworth, GMP’s force lead for retail crime, praised the dedication of officers working on the front line. She said: “Our continued successes in recent years are down to the hard work of local neighbourhood teams, who immerse themselves in their communities to be able to provide bespoke and specific advice for businesses and workers.

“Every day they are getting out, making arrests, securing charges, and getting the type of results that people want to see.

“Officers want to work with stores and their workers, so if you are encountering an issue, please do get in touch with us. Our teams will look to assist you wherever possible.”

GMP says it remains committed to supporting businesses across Greater Manchester, including those in Tameside and Oldham, and ensuring that retail workers can feel safe and supported as they go about their jobs.
