By Chris Gee - Local Democracy Reporter

A corner of Manchester and Tameside is set to become the focus of the national political picture later this month as the voters of Gorton and Denton go to the polls.

The 11 candidates standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election were confirmed by authorities earlier this week.

Those registered to vote in the Manchester and Tameside constituency will go to the polls on Thursday, February 26, 2026, following Andrew Gwynne’s
resignation as the area’s MP on January 22.

In order to cast a ballot, residents need to live within the Gorton and Denton constituency, be a British, Irish, or qualifying Commonwealth citizen aged 18 or
over, and have registered to vote by 11:59pm on Tuesday, February 10.

Labour won the the seat in 2024 but other parties strongly covet the seat, with the result also giving an indication of the mood of the electorate, 18 months after Labour’s landslide win in the general election.

But who have the bookmakers got as favourites to win the hotly contested election?

The Oddschecker website compares the odds offered by major bookmakers on the by-election.

A check on the betting comparison website on Friday, February 7 showed the Greens as favourites with the best price available to those wanting a flutter
on their candidate Hannah Spencer an odds-on 5/6 with Betaway.

Second favourites with all the betting outlets to take the seat are Reform UK, with BetFred pricing their candidate Matt Goodwin at 13/8. The chance of a Labour victory for candidate Angeliki Stogia is rated by BoyleSports at 9/1.

The chances of other parties topping the poll, according to the bookies, are also listed.

Advance UK hopeful Nick Buckley can be backed at 200/1 with Bet365.
Both the Conservatives’ Charlotte Anne Cadden and the Liberal Democrats Jackie Pearcey are listed as 500/1 to win by Boylesports while Sebastian Moore of the Social Democratic Party is offered at 750/1.

None of the other candidates’ parties are listed on the website. The betting market is subject to constant change and the above odds could alter at any time.
