A consultant breast surgeon from Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust has scaled new heights in support of local patients.
In August, Mr Pardeep Arora and a team of fellow climbers embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, to raise vital funds for the Breast Unit at Tameside Hospital.
After eight days on the mountain – six days of climbing followed by two days of descent – the group has now returned home safely, having faced gruelling conditions and dramatic terrain. Guided by expert mountaineers and supported by local porters, the party of eight pushed through key milestones such as Shira Camp (3,510m) and the Barranco Wall before attempting the summit.
The challenge was far from easy, and not every member of the group was able to complete the climb. Yet resilience, courage, and solidarity carried the team forward, with each member contributing to the collective effort. Following their descent, the climbers spent time resting and reflecting together at the Serengeti Safari Park, proud of what they had achieved both personally and for the patients they were supporting.
So far, the climb has raised £2,400 and counting for the Breast Unit, with donations still coming in. The funds will be used to enhance services and facilities, from upgrading essential equipment to providing supportive resources that bring extra comfort to patients and their families during challenging times.
Speaking after the climb, Mr Arora said: “We are all well. There were some hiccups along the way. Not everyone could complete it. But this was a team effort, and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together – both on the mountain and for our patients.”
Emily Whelan, Charity Manager at Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity, added: “We’re thrilled that Mr Arora and the team have completed such a monumental challenge for Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity. Their dedication to improving patient care is inspiring, and we encourage our community to continue showing their support so the Breast Unit can keep making a difference for local people.”
