Tameside set to introduce a new scheme making electric vehicle charging more accessible

Plans are underway to install cross-pavement EV charging channels for eligible Tameside residents without off-street parking, making home charging safer, easier and more accessible.

Tameside Council has approved a cross-pavement charging policy which will unlock funding support from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), for an initial trial phase of approximately 150 installations.

Eligible residents living in terraced housing or other properties without usable off-street parking will have the opportunity to apply for a cross-pavement channel fitted outside their home. Successful applicants will need to pay a one-off £600 fee to cover maintenance over a 10-year period.

The scheme is expected to launch in early 2027, with applications due to open around the same time. Applications, once open, will be subject to eligibility and site-suitability checks.

Residents are also asked to be aware that installing a channel will not reserve an on-street parking space.

The council will install, own and maintain the cross-pavement channel. Residents will be responsible for arranging and paying for their own home chargepoint, charging cable and any necessary electrical work or permissions.

The scheme supports Tameside’s adopted EV Infrastructure Strategy 2026–2031 by reducing barriers to EV uptake and improving access to more affordable at-home charging where this can be delivered safely.

The number of installations delivered through the initial phase will be subject to final costs, eligible demand and site suitability. The scheme will be kept under review as new technologies and further options are developed, but it represents a positive step towards supporting residents to make the switch to electric vehicles.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods Cllr Laura Boyle said: “Making EV charging more accessible to our residents is an important step forward for us as a borough. We are working towards the goal of being Net Zero by 2038, and this scheme will enable more residents to explore greener travel options.”
