Tameside Libraries are rolling out a packed programme of free activities and events to encourage more residents to read for pleasure and rediscover their local libraries.
The monthly programme marks the 2026 National Year of Reading and aims to celebrate books, stories and the joy of reading in all its forms. With sessions designed for all ages and abilities, the initiative hopes to revitalise reading for pleasure across the borough.
This year’s theme, “Go All In,” invites people to read whatever interests them most – from fiction and poetry to biographies, comics and non-fiction. The campaign also highlights the many benefits of reading, including expanded vocabulary, increased creativity and improved mental sharpness.
One of the headline events is a special readathon at Ashton Library on 4 February, held to celebrate National Read Aloud Day. Running from 10.30am to 4.30pm, the event will see readers take part in a continuous relay of stories, sharing their favourite pieces of literature aloud.
Local authors and members of Readers’ Groups will also be taking part, reading from their own work and beloved classics. Residents are welcome to drop in and listen, or tune in via the livestream on Facebook at @TamesideLibraries.
In addition, during National Storytelling Week (31 January to 8 February), every Tameside library will host after-school storytelling sessions, offering families and young readers a chance to enjoy stories together in a relaxed and friendly setting.
To mark the special year, anyone who joins Tameside Libraries in 2026 will receive a shiny gold-coloured membership card, created especially to celebrate the National Year of Reading.
Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Councillor Leanne Feeley, said: “We are so excited to step into the year of reading. Our libraries have a fantastic programme of activities and sessions designed to inspire residents to read more. Reading offers so many benefits, and we’re encouraging everyone across Tameside to get involved. Come along and discover what your local library has to offer!”
