A team from Tameside Council has helped residents affected by redundancies at Ryecroft Foods find new employment, with two former employees already securing new jobs.

The council’s Tameside in Work service stepped in to support staff after 75 employees were made redundant at the company’s ready-to-eat cereal plant in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The team delivered a package of on-site and ongoing employment and skills support, visiting the factory seven times before it closed in February to ensure workers had multiple opportunities to access advice and guidance.

In total, 40 employees chose to engage with the support offered. The team provided a range of assistance including CV development, job searching advice and tailored employability guidance to help individuals plan their next steps.

As a result of the support, two employees have already secured new job offers which they will move directly into following the end of their redundancy notice. Council staff are continuing to work with the remaining workers who engaged with the service to help them find new opportunities.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture at Tameside Council, praised the team’s response.

She said: “I’m incredibly proud of the fast and compassionate response from our Tameside in Work team.

“Redundancy can be a very unsettling experience, and our priority has been to ensure every affected employee receives the guidance, reassurance, and practical support they need to move forward with confidence.

“It’s fantastic to see residents already securing new employment and we will continue to assist all those impacted as they take their next steps.”

Tameside Council’s Employment and Skills service offers support to all residents, whether they are in work, signed off sick, looking for employment or unsure where to start. The service can help people improve their skills and explore new career opportunities.
