Tameside College secures major funding to support priority growth sectors

Tameside College is set to benefit from a major investment of £562,533 to enhance its facilities and expand training opportunities in key growth sectors, including digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and clean energy.

The funding will support the creation of a High Specification Computing Laboratory alongside a new Engineering Laboratory, equipped for 3D printing, renewable energy technologies and specialist skills training. These upgraded facilities will help deliver Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), Level 4 and 5 apprenticeships, and flexible training designed to meet the needs outlined in the Greater Manchester Local Skills Improvement Plan and national Skills England priorities.

College leaders say the investment will play a crucial role in strengthening local skills development, supporting the region’s transition to a greener economy and aligning with wider growth initiatives such as the Eastern Growth Corridor and the GM Get Working Plan.

The funding comes from the Government’s Strategic Priorities Grant, which supports colleges and universities in developing new facilities and improving equipment for courses in priority subjects like engineering and manufacturing. Tameside College is one of 60 institutions nationally to secure backing in this latest round.

The boost is expected to give young people in Ashton-under-Lyne access to world-class training environments, helping them develop the skills needed to succeed in high-growth sectors and meet the needs of local employers.

“By embedding cutting-edge renewable energy technologies and advanced manufacturing into our curriculum we are giving our students the skills, confidence and hands-on experience they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“Our new Renewable Energy Training Hub will not only support local employers and the transition to green energy, but it will also inspire the next generation of engineers and specialists.

Local MP Angela Rayner also welcomed the news, praising the college’s successful bid.

The upgrade is expected to strengthen the borough’s technical education offer, bolster the regional skills pipeline and support long-term economic growth across Greater Manchester.
