Swimming club volunteer shaves her head for charity

Ashton-under-Lyne Swimming Club’s dedicated volunteer Barbara made a powerful statement this week, bravely shaving her head in front of swimmers, families, and coaches to raise money for two charities close to the club’s heart, Reuben’s Retreat and Finding Rainbows.

The head shave formed the grand finale of the club’s annual Knockout Tournament; a series of races that sees swimmers of all ages go head-to-head until a final champion is crowned. This year’s winner, Alexander Birch, earned not only the title of 2025 Knockout Champion, but also the unique honour of taking the clippers to Barbara’s hair.

The club’s Facebook page celebrated the moment, describing Barbara as a “superstar volunteer” and applauding her courage and generosity.

Barbara, well known for her years of commitment to the club, smiled throughout the event as her head was shaved, inspiring swimmers and supporters alike.

Both Reuben’s Retreat, which supports families of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and Finding Rainbows, which offers bereavement support, are causes with deep local significance. The club hopes the fundraiser will make a meaningful difference to both organisations.
