Suspended Labour MP Oliver Ryan reinstated

Councillor Oliver Ryan

A Labour MP suspended over offensive WhatsApp messages has been reinstated by the party, according to national reports.

Oliver Ryan, the former Audenshaw councillor, has been informed he will have the party whip restored when Parliament reconvenes in September, following the conclusion of an internal investigation into controversial messages exchanged in a private WhatsApp group.

The group, named ‘Trigger Me Timbers’, became the centre of a political storm earlier this year after offensive remarks were revealed to have been shared among Labour figures. Ryan was among several members suspended over their involvement, including fellow MP Andrew Gwynne, who represents Denton and Gorton.

Ryan came under fire after appearing to mock a fellow Labour MP’s sexuality and referring to local Labour leader Colin Bailey using an offensive nickname. Prior to his suspension, Ryan issued a public apology, stating: “I did not see every message, but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said.

“I also made some comments myself which I deeply regret and would not make today and for that, I wholeheartedly apologise.”

Three Labour councillors who were involved in the ‘Trigger Me Timbers’ WhatsApp group have been expelled by the party, two have been handed six-month suspensions, and three others have received formal warnings. One councillor will face no further action, while three more chose to resign from the party during the investigation process.

Despite Ryan’s reinstatement, Andrew Gwynne remains suspended and under investigation. Gwynne was also dismissed from his role as a health minister following the revelations, which were first reported by the Mail on Sunday.

In a statement at the time, Gwynne said: “I deeply regret my badly misjudged commments and apologise for any offense I’ve caused. I’ve served the Labour Party all my life and it was a huge honour to be appointed a minister by Keir Starmer.

“I entirely understand the decisions the PM and the party have taken and, while very sad to have been suspended, will support them in any way I can.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said the matter had been handled in accordance with party rules: “These matters have been investigated thoroughly, in line with the Labour Party’s rules and procedures.

“The Labour Party took swift action as soon as we became aware of the activity in this WhatsApp group.

“The party will not hesitate to take action against members who fall short of the high standards we expect, in line with our rules and procedures. We cannot comment further on any ongoing investigations.”
