Supporting young minds: mental health event for young people coming to Tameside

Children and young people across Tameside are being invited to take part in a special event this month, focused on mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The Children and Young People Mental Health Event aims to open up important conversations around mental health, while providing access to local support services and fun, engaging activities.

Organised in collaboration with Tameside Council and the NHS, the event will bring together a wide range of specialist services under one roof. From mental health support teams, Active Tameside, to sexual health and drug and alcohol services, the event is designed to help young people and their families understand what support is available in the local area.

More than just an information fair, the event will be interactive and inclusive, with plenty of opportunities for attendees to get involved. Activities on the day will include yoga sessions, face painting, hair braiding, biscuit decorating, and even hoop throwing – all aimed at creating a relaxed and welcoming environment where mental health conversations can happen naturally.

The event was inspired by members of the Children in Care Council and Care Leavers’ Forum, who wanted to create a space where young people could feel supported, informed, and empowered to look after their mental health.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Children and Families Councillor Teresa Smith said: “It’s great to see important conversations sparking around mental health and wellbeing and this event sounds like a fantastic way to go about it and raise awareness to the support available in Tameside. A big well done to the Care Leavers’ Forum and Children in Care Council members for suggesting this event, which is going to make a huge difference to children and young people in Tameside. Although this is a serious topic, this awareness event is intended to be fun-filled and will be a day full of connectivity, inspiration, support and joy.”

The event is free to attend at Hyde Town Hall and takes place on Thursday 21 August from 11am-3.30pm.
