Six people will be fined after Tameside Council officers investigated litter and flytipping during an Our Streets Day of Action of Hyde.

Six individuals will be fined after Tameside Council officers uncovered evidence of littering and fly-tipping during a community clean-up in Hyde town centre.

The enforcement took place as part of an Our Streets Day of Action on Wednesday 17 July, bringing together local partners and residents in a joint effort to tackle environmental and community safety issues.

Pupils from Greenfield Primary School, local volunteers, and police community support officers joined ward councillors and staff from the council’s waste enforcement and community safety teams to carry out a large-scale litter pick.

As well as cleaning up the town centre, the event featured a community safety information stand in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre, offering advice on personal safety, home security, and a chance for residents to raise local concerns.

During the clean-up, officers found evidence linking six people to litter and fly-tipping offences. Each will receive a fixed penalty notice and could face prosecution if the fines are not paid.

Tameside Council has issued 123 fixed penalty notices for waste-related offences so far this year, as part of its ongoing commitment to keeping communities clean and safe.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods Cllr Laura Boyle said: “This is yet another great result from our regular Our Streets days of action. Thank you so much to everyone involved for your efforts and enthusiasm – it was fantastic to see the school children and community volunteers in Hyde joining our members, staff and partners in helping to keep the town centre clean and tidy.

“The school contacted us afterwards to say the children enjoyed it so much they have asked to take part in any future litter picks, which is just wonderful in inspiring our next generation to take care of and pride in their local communities. Well done to all the children involved!

“We have street cleaners and waste enforcement officers out every day clearing and investigating litter and flytipping but looking after our streets is everyone’s responsibility and we need the whole community to work with us to tackle the scale of the issue and help take care of their neighbourhoods.

“Dropping litter and flytipping waste are criminal offences – there is no excuse for either and they spoil the local area for everyone. We will always take enforcement action against those responsible where we find evidence.”
