Emmaus Mossley is set to host a special Solidarity Sale on Saturday 23 August, giving local people the chance to grab a bargain while helping to tackle global poverty and social inequality.
Every penny raised on the day will be donated to Emmaus International, the global movement that unites more than 450 Emmaus groups in over 40 countries. Funds will go directly towards worldwide solidarity programmes and campaigns supporting vulnerable and marginalised communities.
Emmaus International was founded in 1971 and each of its member groups holds at least one Solidarity Sale a year. These fundraising events are vital in ensuring that projects around the world can continue. Past initiatives funded through the sales include disaster relief, housing schemes, water projects in Africa, education for orphaned children in India and refugee support in war-torn regions.
Hazel Hodkinson, Retail Manager at Emmaus Mossley, said: “Solidarity is one of the core values shared by all Emmaus groups. By shopping with us on the day of our Solidarity Sale, you will be taking action to help people and communities in desperate need. The funds raised on this day will be used on a range of global programmes such as improving access to basic human rights, such as education, health and water.”
Closer to home, Emmaus Mossley provides a lifeline for people who have experienced homelessness. The community, which opened in 1997, offers a stable home, companionship, tailored support and meaningful work opportunities to up to 26 people, known as companions. Acts of solidarity are central to the charity’s ethos, giving those it supports the chance to contribute to the wider movement and rebuild self-esteem by helping others.
Emmaus Mossley’s Solidarity Sale charity event will take place on Saturday 23 August, 10am-4pm, at their Secondhand Superstore, Queen Street, Mossley, OL5 9AH.
