Ryecroft Hall Community Association celebrates 50 golden years at the heart of Audenshaw

It started with a dance – and half a century later, Ryecroft Hall Community Association is celebrating its Golden Anniversary as one of Audenshaw’s most cherished community hubs.

The Association, which first came together in 1975 when Frank and Renee Mooring organised a dance at Ryecroft Hall, has grown into a thriving group with around 300 members. To mark its 50th anniversary, the committee is presenting each member with a commemorative pen and holding a celebratory prize draw.

Today, the Association offers a packed programme of weekly classes and activities ranging from health and fitness to dance, drama, cooking and computer sessions. Popular community events run throughout the year, including the annual Christmas lights switch-on, which takes place this year on Friday 28 November, and a festive party for members in December.

The success of Ryecroft Hall Community Association owes much to its dedicated volunteers. Chairman Pam Watkin and vice chairman Brenda Reaney have each been involved for 42 years, serving in their current roles for four decades.

Pam said: “It’s vital for Audenshaw and is our hub for the community. It’s a nice building and people are friendly and can come and have a brew and a chat in the warm and attend the classes and events. It developed from nothing and has grown and grown and it’s brilliant how we did it. The more the merrier if people want to come and join.”

Councillor Teresa Smith, a committee member and Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Children and Families, also praised the milestone: “Congratulations to Ryecroft Hall Community Association on their Golden Anniversary. It’s fantastic how the Association has developed to become an important hub for the community that provides something for everyone with its array of sessions and events. I’d like to thank everyone involved for their work and dedication that has helped the Association thrive and become such a success at the heart of the community.”

Ryecroft Hall itself is steeped in history. The Grade II listed building, off Manchester Road, was once in private ownership and even served as a voluntary hospital during the First World War. In 1922 it was gifted to the people of Audenshaw for council use, and Tameside Council staff continue to be based there today. Alongside this, the Community Association ensures the hall is alive with activity and accessible to local people.
