Residents invited to Household Support Fund information session

Tameside residents are being encouraged to attend a Household Support Fund information session in the new year, offering practical help for people struggling with the rising cost of living.

The event, hosted by Tameside Council’s Household Support Fund team, will take place on Thursday 8th January from 1pm to 3pm at New Life Church, Hall Street, Ashton (OL6 6SD). It is open to anyone who wants to find out more about the support available this winter.

The Household Support Fund provides a one-off grant to help low-income households with essential food and energy costs. The scheme aims to ease the additional financial pressure that winter often brings and reduce the need for residents to rely on emergency food support.

Visitors to the session will be able to speak directly with council staff, learn more about eligibility criteria and receive guidance on how to apply for the fund.

Wave 2 of the Household Support Fund is now open and will accept applications until 31 March 2026. Residents who previously received a payment in Wave 1 may be able to apply again, subject to eligibility.

Cllr Tafheen Sharif, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Public Health, said: “We know this time of year can be incredibly difficult for many people, especially when financial pressures increase. The Household Support Fund is there to offer vital support for those who need it most, and I would encourage anyone who is struggling to come along, find out more and speak to our team. You don’t have to face these challenges alone; we are here to help and are getting out into local communities to help people who most need this support.”

Let’s start with the bad news. James Reade, economics professor at Reading university, has been in touch about my assertion last week that Latics require 1.8333 points per game to reach 71 points. By his calculations, which are far more trustworthy than mine – who says you won’t amount to anything without GCSE maths? – Latics will need more than 71 points to clinch seventh place this season. Professor Reade reckons the target is a minimum of 74 points.
