Tameside Macmillan Unit has announced the launch of a new bereavement support group aimed at helping people affected by cancer cope with the loss of a loved one.
Designed to offer a safe and compassionate space, the group provides an opportunity for attendees to share their feelings, connect with others who have experienced similar loss, and find comfort at a difficult time.
The first session will take place on Wednesday 17 December, from 10am to 12pm, at The Monastery Manchester in Gorton, a venue offering free parking and fully accessible facilities.
This year’s Grief Awareness Week theme, ‘Growing with Grief’, focuses on how individuals can come together to build strength, lay foundations for the future, and feel less alone following bereavement. Run by The Good Grief Trust, the national campaign encourages open conversations about loss and ensures people know where to find support.
Tania Armstrong, Macmillan Information and Support Officer at Tameside Macmillan Unit, emphasised the importance of accessible bereavement support: “The death of a loved one is often painful and overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Our new bereavement support group is open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. It’s a great opportunity to share your feelings without judgement, while receiving expert support to process your grief in a safe environment.”
Led by trained facilitators, the sessions will offer a blend of emotional support, opportunities to share or simply listen, and guidance on practical coping strategies. Attendees will also be signposted to specialist services where needed.
To book a place at the first session, contact the Tameside Macmillan Unit by calling 0161 922 5644, emailing macmillan.info@tgh.nhs.uk, or completing the online registration form.
