New park for Hattersley approved

Empty land in Hattersley will be transformed into a giant park for locals to enjoy.

The new park includes a multi-use games area (MUGA), footpaths, cycle paths and play equipment has been promised in the vision for this corner of Tameside. The council has approved the plans to transform this section of greenbelt land opposite the Hattersley Tesco site, over Ashworth Lane, and bring in the much-needed facility.

The new leisure facility will sit next to a new housing and retail development currently under construction off the A560/Stockport Road.

According to developer Onward Homes, a study has shown there are limited outdoor play areas or sports pitches in the area that are free for the public. It is hoped this new facility could fill that gap as well as enhance connectivity by extending the existing cycle and pedestrian network and linking with the bridleway network.

The separate sections include an inclusive/young play area; a quiet play area; an active play area where the MUGA would be; a flexi play area; and a natural discovery trail.

A plethora of natural planters, seating and trees would be scattered throughout the facility as well, according to planning papers. The MUGA would offer sports markings for a variety of games, including football, netball, basketball and tennis.

A charity called ‘Make Space for Girls’ was used as inspiration for the design process. The organisation specialises in helping make public spaces that are designed to make teenage girls feel valued and included.

Planning papers read: “The masterplan illustrates the proposal, featuring a series of carefully-designed high-quality play spaces comprising both formal and informal play areas.

“The diverse range of inclusive play spaces has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate children across various age groups, from toddlers to early teens.

“The main multi-user routes connect key access points to the play park, offering a better walking experience through the park and linking with the existing footpaths off Chain Bar Lane.”
