The new leader of the Conservative party in Tameside has been announced.
Coun Andrea Colbourne has been appointed to lead the Tories after Coun Doreen Dickinson stepped down from her role. The Hyde Godley ward representative will run a team of five councillors following the local elections, which saw them lose two seats.
Coun Phil Chadwick will be her deputy in the Tameside Conservatives. Coun Colbourne hopes to rebuild the local party after a ‘disappointing’ local elections and focus on issues that ‘matter most to residents’.
In a statement following her appointment as leader, Coun Colbourne said: “I am honoured to have been elected as leader of the Conservative group on Tameside council and I am delighted to be joined by Coun Phil Chadwick as deputy leader. I would like to thank my colleagues for placing their trust in me.
“While the recent elections were clearly disappointing for us, particularly the loss of Liam Billington and despite the very best efforts of all our candidates, this is a moment for reflection and renewal. The results mean that we are no longer the main opposition on the council, and we are realistic about the challenges that brings.
“As group leader, my priority is to regroup, listen and set out a clear plan to rebuild and strengthen the Conservative voice in Tameside. That means focusing relentlessly on the issues that matter most to our residents, supporting our councillors so they can be effective advocates in their wards, and working towards putting ourselves in the best possible position at future elections.
“Looking ahead, we are open to working constructively with other groups where it is clearly in the best interests of our residents. Any such decisions will always be guided by what delivers the best outcomes for our communities.
“Although committee and scrutiny appointments are yet to be confirmed, residents can be reassured that the Conservative group will continue to work together, hold the council to account and speak up for local people.
“Our ambition is clear: to ensure that residents across Tameside continue to have a strong, responsible and engaged Conservative voice on their council.”
The new Tory leader will follow in the footsteps of Coun Doreen Dickinson, who led the group for seven years. Coun Colbourne credited the hard work and commitment shown in office by her predecessor.
Coun Dickinson will continue to serve the residents of Stalybridge South despite stepping down as group leader.
