Ashton MP Angela Rayner met with pupils at St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Audenshaw to discuss growing concerns around road safety outside the school.
Members of the school council invited Ms Rayner to visit the Audenshaw Road site, where they shared their ideas on how to reduce traffic speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Ahead of the visit, pupils had written to their MP outlining their worries. They said staff, parents and local residents had been injured by drivers attempting to beat traffic lights, with some vehicles even mounting the kerb. Children also described frequently hearing car horns and witnessing drivers using inappropriate language due to road rage.
During her visit, Ms Rayner listened to the pupils’ experiences and discussed the challenges posed by heavy and fast-moving traffic near the school gates. She reaffirmed her commitment to working alongside the council and local police to explore measures that could improve safety for families in the area.
As well as addressing road safety concerns, the visit marked a celebratory moment for the school, as Ms Rayner officially opened “The Nest” – a new outdoor learning hub designed to enhance pupils’ educational experiences and wellbeing through nature-based learning.
Speaking after the visit, Ms Rayner said: “It was fantastic to visit St Stephen’s and spend time with such brilliant pupils and dedicated staff. I know how important it is for parents to feel confident that their children are safe getting to and from school, so it was really valuable to hear first-hand about the road safety concerns in the area.
“I’m committed to working with the school and local partners to look at what more can be done to improve safety outside the gates.
“It was a real privilege to officially open The Nest. Spaces like this make such a difference – giving children the chance to learn in a different environment, build confidence and enjoy their surroundings. It’s a wonderful addition to the school and I look forward to seeing the children enjoy it for years to come.”
Headteacher Guy Lovgreen added: “We were delighted to welcome Angela to St Stephen’s. The opening of The Nest is a very special moment for our school, and it was great for our pupils to share their ideas and experiences directly. We’re grateful for her support on the important issue of road safety.”
