Two representatives from homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley have returned from an inspiring week at the Emmaus World Assembly in the Netherlands.
Gary, a resident supported by Emmaus Mossley, and Rebecca, the charity’s Online Sales Co-ordinator, travelled to Someren in the Netherlands to take part in the event. From 13 to 17 April, Gary and Rebecca joined hundreds of attendees to share their experiences and coordinate efforts to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequality.
After returning from the event, Gary commented: “Following on from my visit to the last Emmaus World Assembly in Uruguay, this Assembly in the Netherlands lived up to all my expectations.
“It was amazing to hear about the wide variety of work Emmaus does around the world to help people who suffer most. I was especially moved to hear from people at Emmaus communities in current war zones, such as Ukraine and Lebanon.
“My other highlights included a visit to Emmaus Domstad and being interviewed about my experience by a lady from an Emmaus group in Finland, to inspire young people whom she helps in her community.”
Emmaus Mossley empowers people to overcome homelessness for good, providing the foundation of a home and life-changing tailored support. The charity is part of the worldwide Emmaus movement, with all members acting against the causes of poverty whilst empowering people to make positive change happen.
The Emmaus World Assembly takes place every four years and brings together representatives from more than 400 Emmaus organisations across the world. This year’s event included talks, presentations, workshops, a public round-table event and visits to local Emmaus communities and shops.
The event also included votes to agree collective actions for the next four years and to appoint representatives to key roles within the movement. Emmaus Mossley staff member Rebecca was successful in her election bid to become a Councillor of Emmaus International.
Rebecca commented: “The Emmaus World Assembly was really insightful and a fantastic way to connect with Emmaus members from all over the world. It was great to share stories and learn about the diversity of Emmaus groups on a global level. Some topics were sensitive, yet important to discuss, with a focus on solidarity and standing together.
“I'm very proud to have been elected as a Councillor of Emmaus International for Emmaus Europe. I hope to encourage positive change and make a real difference with my fellow board members.”
