Children at Gorse Hall primary school took part in an interactive session with GMP Police Community Support Officer and staff from the Crime Prevention Team to raise awareness of hate crime.

Tameside Council’s Community Cohesion Officer’s and representatives from the GMP held a workshop for children in both Year 5 and Year 6, which involved learning about the different types of hate crime, online hate and bullying.

Stalybridge pupils were shown and given examples of hate crime and hate incidents and how people are different, finishing with where and how they can report any cases of hate crime.

The session then gave the children an opportunity to decide which scenarios of hate crime fit into which protected characteristics as police officers, to help reinforce the consequences of these situations outlined by GMP.

The activities were an engaging way to educate the pupils on what is acceptable and appropriate within society using recent cases of hate crime. The scheme also introduces children to a positive experience of policing.

The ‘Mini Police’ programme links in with the statutory Key Stage 2 requirements of Personal, Social, Health, Economic (PSHE) education.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity Cllr Stephen Homer, who is responsible for community safety, said: “This scheme is an excellent way to raise awareness of hate crime and get the pupils interacting with local police officers to create a safe space in the community for all.

“It’s important we involve children and young people in these conversations and educate them about hate crime and the consequences to help them keep themselves and other safe. This kind of education from a young age could have a real impact in developing a more inclusive community and preventing future hate crime offences.”

“I’d like to thank the team, who did a fantastic job engaging the children and guiding them throughout the conversations.”
