Millions enjoy cultural events in Tameside

Record numbers of more than a million residents and visitors took part in a wide array of cultural events held by Tameside Council over the past year.

A report, that went before the council’s executive cabinet on 24 June highlighted that, across the full financial year (April 2025 to March 2026), the council delivered 153 cultural events in public spaces across the borough, welcoming an impressive 1,142,581 participants – far exceeding the service’s year-end target of 800,000.

The diverse events included activities such as Ashton Tulip Trail, which attracted over 94,500 visitors in Ashton Town Centre. Other highlights included popular regular events such as Stalybridge Street Fest and Mossley Farmers Market, alongside seasonal celebrations like the Northern Lights Winter Parade and a pop-up summer beach event.

The fantastic momentum continues as Ashton is set to offer a vibrant year-round programme of events as part of the transformation of Ashton Market square. Visitors will be able enjoy free activities, live performances, artisan markets, and themed Super Saturday events celebrating local talent. Whether with family or friends, Ashton will provide an exciting destination with something to entertain and interest residents and shoppers, all year round.

Stalybridge is also stepping into the spotlight with a lively programme of events at Victoria Market Hall, celebrating culture, creativity, and community. From summer festivals to festive favourites, there’s something happening in every season. Expect live music, family activities, interactive and engaging experiences, and artisan markets, alongside highlights like pop-up events, candlelit concerts, and daytime discos. With many free and low-cost options, it’s easy for everyone to get involved and enjoy.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “It’s amazing to hear how many residents and visitors have joined us at our cultural events. Our teams work hard to deliver a vibrant and varied programme throughout the year, with something for all ages and interests – creating great opportunities for the community while attracting visitors from outside the borough.

“These events are helping to put Tameside on the map as a visitor destination and support the local economy by bringing more trade to our businesses. I’m increasingly hearing Tameside’s events being talked about across Greater Manchester, which is a fantastic reflection of their quality and success. Thank you to everyone for supporting our events and celebrating their local community – there’s lots more coming up to get involved in.”
