Mayor visits Age UK Tameside to see impact of vital services first hand

Age UK Tameside recently welcomed a special visit from the Mayoress of Tameside, Shibley Allam, accompanied by Mayor Consort Mr Mohammed Khairul Alam and Councillor Andrea Colbourne, offering them a firsthand insight into the vital services the charity provides for older residents in the borough.

During the visit, the dignitaries were given a full tour of the charity’s Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne, meeting staff and service users and learning more about the wide range of support available to local people aged 50 and over.

Kate Potter, Community Engagement Worker for Age UK Tameside, described the visit as a valuable opportunity to highlight the organisation’s work: “We were delighted to welcome Tameside's Mayoress, Shibley Allam, Mayor Consort Mr Mohammed Khairul Alam and Councillor Andrea Colbourne to Age UK Tameside,

“They enjoyed an in-depth tour of the Centre and saw firsthand the difference our charity makes to people over 50 in our community.”

The visitors met with the charity’s dedicated Information and Advice Team, observed a Chair-Based Exercise Class in action, and explored clinical services including the Happy Feet and Ear Wax Clinics.

“They were informed about all our community-based services,” added Kate, “which ensure we are reaching as many people as possible who need support - whether it be a visit from one of our Community Support Workers or a Strength and Balance class in a local community centre.”

The tour also included a stop at the vibrant 131 Club and the peaceful Oasis Garden, both key features of the Centre that offer social connection and a welcoming space for older residents. The afternoon was rounded off with a delicious buffet and an opportunity for open discussion with staff and volunteers.

“It was a pleasure to showcase all that we offer to ensure our local Council are fully aware of what Age UK Tameside has to offer local people,” said Kate.
