Drivers are being warned to expect a second day of closures and delays across the M60 after an eight-vehicle crash yesterday (7th July).
The road was shut off after an HGV crossed through the central reservation and struck 'several lamp columns in the process'.
As a result, another HGV had a full load of beer barrels fall into the carriageways. The collision caused several ruptured fuel tanks which resulted in a large amount of diesel being spilled across the carriageway.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 11:26am, whereupon the motorway was shut off in both directions.
Witnesses said the accident was caused by a car 'racing' down the motorway, causing another to swerve and hit the HGV, which swerved into the central reservation and caused a knock-on effect.
Nine people were treated for injuries at the scene by the North West Ambulance Service, three of whom were taken to Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport for further treatment.
In a statement, National Highways have warned that drivers can expect further delays and closures while a cleanup takes place.
"The M60 in Greater Manchester remains closed both ways J25-J1 near Stockport following an earlier collision, emergency barrier and bridge parapet repairs," they said.
"Contractors will be working throughout the day to complete repairs to reopen the road."
