Join the clean-up: Great British Spring Clean comes to Tameside

Residents across Tameside are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and take part in this year’s Great British Spring Clean campaign to help create a cleaner, tidier borough.

Running from 13 to 29 March, the national initiative invites residents, community groups, schools and businesses to make a pledge and organise or join local litter picks. By taking part, volunteers can help tackle litter and environmental mess while also contributing to the nationwide count of waste collected and the number of clean-up events completed.

To support those getting involved, a network of Litter Hubs is available in community spaces across Tameside. Individuals and groups can book free equipment through their local hub, including hi-vis jackets, litter pickers and black bags. Once collections are complete, arrangements will be made for the safe and appropriate disposal of the waste.

The Litter Hubs operate all year round, not just during the Great British Spring Clean, meaning residents can organise litter picks at any time. The initiative forms part of the council’s wider Our Streets campaign, which highlights the shared responsibility of keeping neighbourhoods clean, welcoming and safe for everyone.

Councillor Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “We’re encouraging anyone who can to take part in the Great British Spring Clean. It’s a fantastic chance to show pride in our towns by keeping them clean and tidy. A little really does go a long way, and when we work together, we make a big difference.

“We have street cleaning teams out every day, but they can’t keep up with the amount of litter dropped in the borough on their own – we all have a part to play. Thank you to everyone, including all the fantastic local litter picking groups, who helps to look after their local areas.”

Residents can find their nearest Litter Hub and discover how to get involved by visiting the council’s website or contacting their local community venue.
