Residents can once again access services at Hyde Town Hall after the building reopened today (23 March) following a temporary closure caused by a fire last month.
The incident, which occurred on 24 February, involved a small fire in the basement. It was later confirmed to have been caused by an external electrical fault. Although the fire itself was minor, it resulted in smoke damage affecting parts of the historic building, prompting its closure while repairs and safety checks were carried out.
Services within the building are now returning to normal. Hyde Library has resumed its regular staffed opening hours, allowing visitors to once again make use of its facilities. However, the library’s Open+ access system remains unavailable due to an ongoing technical fault. Residents seeking further details can visit the council’s website or contact the library directly.
Room bookings at the Town Hall have also resumed, restoring access for community groups and events that rely on the venue.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Finance and Resources, Hugh Roderick, thanked the public for their understanding during the disruption.
He said: “Thank you to everyone for your patience while we’ve been getting the building ready to reopen. While the fire was only very small, it did lead to some smoke damage in the building which we’ve had to address but we’re very pleased to welcome people back into the building now.”
