A major shake-up of roads and junctions has been earmarked for Denton town centre.

A government-led plan to kickstart growth across the country would see the Tameside town benefit from better accessibility for both cyclists and pedestrians, according to the government.

Under the plans, Denton would see a reconfiguration of roads and junctions; bicycle access in the town centre; cycling parking facilities; and junction modifications to improve accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians.

It is hoped, through the ‘Plan for Change’, that people will get better access to jobs and opportunities as part of the government’s £301m commitment to transport schemes across England and Wales.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said: “We are investing in Britain’s renewal, in what matters to you in the places that you live. This latest confirmation will further unlock economic power by delivering the infrastructure needed to grow the economy.

“This £301 million investment is exactly what our Plan for Change is about – economic growth which connects people to opportunity, creating construction jobs and making it easier to get about.”

The Chancellor allocated this cash during last month’s Spending Review, which also saw £15.6bn for buses, trams and local train infrastructure in England’s city regions through Transport for City Regions (TCR) funding.

The same pot of money will allow Greater Manchester to transform the Metrolink tram network. The £2.5bn of cash for the city-region will see new stops in Bury, north Manchester and Oldham and a Metrolink extension to Stockport town centre.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander added: “This investment is a step toward building a transport system that serves every corner of England and Wales, especially in areas that have been overlooked for far too long.

“This isn’t just about faster journeys – it’s about unlocking growth, creating new jobs, and laying the groundwork for a more connected country.”
