Historic Glossop bank gets new life

One of Glossop’s most recognisable buildings is about to begin an exciting new chapter.

Today, Friday November 28, the former NatWest Bank on the High Street will reopen its grand doors as BANK Bar & Brasserie, an independent all-day venue created by brother-and-sister team Charlie and Katie Wray.

The Wrays, sixth-generation Glossopians, describe the project as a passionate investment in their hometown - something designed not only to honour Glossop’s past, but to help shape its future.

“We grew up here. We live here. This is our town, and we want to give something back,” says co-founder Charlie Wray. “Glossop deserves spaces that feel exciting but authentic, and we believe BANK can become a new kind of local landmark.”

The building, originally constructed in 1897, remains rich with historic character. BANK’s design team have kept its architectural features front and centre, incorporating high ceilings, elegant details, and playful nods to its banking heritage throughout the space. The overall feel is classic with a twist, warm, stylish and built to bring people together.

During the soft launch this week, the venue impressed with its spectacular interior, thoughtful lighting, and welcoming atmosphere. The transformation preserves the building’s legacy while giving Glossop a modern, vibrant new social hub.

BANK will offer brunch, lunch, and evening dining, with dishes inspired by British and French classics including Chicken Kyiv’s and Moules Marinière and elevated by Northern flavours and seasonal local produce. The kitchen is led by Glossop-born head chef Ryan Clarke, whose dishes at the soft launch were beautifully presented and delicious, demonstrating a standard that sets BANK apart.

A strong cocktail programme, curated wine list, and a variety of non-alcoholic options help position BANK as an all-day destination for every occasion.

The Wrays are clear: BANK isn’t just another venue; it’s a commitment to Glossop. The business is working closely with Derbyshire farms, local producers, and high street suppliers, and has made a point of hiring local talent.

“We’re not a chain. We’re fiercely independent,” says Katie Wray. “Reviving a piece of local heritage, we’re transforming a once-essential community building into a vibrant new social hub. As high street banks fade, we’re celebrating what once was while supporting what is: local produce and regional talent.”

Katie is a lifelong lover of restaurants, she is passionate about creating memorable dining experiences shaped by atmosphere, conversation, and thoughtful detail. For her, hospitality is about connection, and BANK reflects that philosophy in every element.

Charlie brings entrepreneurial experience, community spirit, and a deep passion for food and wine. While managing the family engineering business, he has spent years exploring hospitality across the region. BANK brings together everything he loves: people, creativity, and the chance to contribute something meaningful to Glossop.

“Glossop is enjoying a renaissance,” Charlie says. “We want to play an active role in that.”

As new independent venues continue to open, Glossop’s food and drink scene is flourishing. BANK is poised to become a standout addition: a place with history, heart, and exceptional hospitality.

Based on our visit to the soft launch, where the food was superb, the drinks were outstanding, and the interior exceeded expectations, BANK looks set to make an immediate impact.
