Tameside Council is calling on residents, businesses, and future electric vehicle (EV) users to share their thoughts on a new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (EVI) Strategy, as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce emissions and reach Net Zero by 2038.
The public consultation, which opens on 1st September and runs until 27th October 2025, invites the community to help shape the future of EV charging across the borough. With £1.3 million allocated through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, the Council aims to accelerate the installation of public charging points for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The initiative comes in response to the climate emergency declared by Tameside Council in February 2020, with transportation currently accounting for around a third of the borough’s carbon emissions.
Councillor Laura Boyle, Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods, said: "Since declaring a climate emergency in 2020, we've been actively looking at ways to tackle the causes. Enhancing our Electric Vehicle Infrastructure is a crucial step in cutting emissions and moving towards a more sustainable future.
"We're really hopeful about this strategy and want as many people as possible to take park in the consultation to help us design a system that works for everyone."
The council is especially keen to ensure that the charging infrastructure is inclusive, accessible, and well-distributed—meeting the needs of all residents, including older adults and those with disabilities.
Councillor Steven Homer, Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, added: "The consultation is a perfect opportunity for residents and businesses to voice their ideas, concerns or questions. We're committed to building a forward-thinking borough, and this feedback will help ensure the new infrastructure is fit for purpose and fairly distributed."
Residents can take part in the consultation both online and in person, with several community events planned throughout September:
-
5th September 1pm - 4pm, Droylsden Library
-
15th September 10am-2pm, The Grafton Centre, Hyde
-
20th September 10am-2pm, Ashton Artisan Market
-
26th September 9am-1pm, Stalybridge Means Business Network Event
For those who prefer to attend remotely, two online webinars are scheduled:
-
6th October 5:30–6:30pm
-
13th October 5:30–6:30pm
The council will use feedback to identify priorities, preferred charging locations, and potential challenges - helping guide the borough's transition to cleaner transport options.
