The half term activities for May have got a nature theme!

Nature is at the heart of Tameside’s half-term holiday activities programme (26 May to 6 June) organised by the council’s libraries and culture services.

Tying in with its successful and popular Community Roots programme, Dukinfield Library is hosting two events: a build a bug home family drop-in on Tuesday 27 May and bird-box building and decoration on Monday 2 June. Both take place from 10am to noon.

On 6 June, it’s over to Denton Library for the I Spy outdoor safari family drop-in (10am to noon) which allows people to decorate their own binoculars inspired by the local flora and fauna, then use them on a trail around Victoria Park.

Tameside Libraries is also hosting free minibeast activities for four to 11-year-olds. Each involves crafts, games and a treasure hunt.

The dates are: 29 May, Denton Library (2 to 3pm); 2 June, Hyde Library (10.30 to 11.30am); 4 June, Stalybridge Library (2 to 3pm) and 6 June, Ashton Library (2 to 3pm).

Ever-popular Make, Do and Play sessions take place as usual at Portland Basin Museum, Ashton. Suitable for all ages, they take place from 11am to 3pm and cost £1.35 per child with tickets available at the reception desk. Children must be supervised at all times.

27 May: What’s in the Water? – create little paper puppets of ducks, fish, otters and other residents of the waterways; 29 May: Draw Along with Caroline; 3 June: Create Paper Puppets; 5 June: World Environmental Day, make colourful flowers from recycled materials.

All four sessions are led by professional artist Caroline Coates.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member for culture and lifelong learning, said: “Once again our services have put together a wide-ranging programme of fun activities to educate and entertain over the half-term holiday.

“I’m sure the nature theme will prove highly popular and encourage children to use their creative capabilities to the full.”
