Christmas magic hit a slight bump in the road on Tuesday morning (9 December 2025) when Santa’s sleigh, temporarily disguised as a car, broke down en route to Tameside General Hospital.
But the festive mission was far from over, thanks to the quick-thinking officers of Tameside’s Neighbourhood Policing Team.
With a sack full of gifts destined for children spending Christmas in hospital, Santa wasn’t left stranded for long. Officers swooped in to help the man in red complete his important appointment, ensuring that not a single child missed out on a special festive visit.
The presents delivered were bought using tuck shop funds raised by officers at Ashton Police Station, with selection boxes, sweets and other treats ready to bring smiles to young patients. Additional selection boxes were also donated by B&M and Iceland stores in Ashton town centre, helping to make the surprise even sweeter.
Arriving alongside hospital staff, the officers supported Santa as he handed out gifts and shared moments of joy with children who will unfortunately be spending their Christmas at Tameside Hospital. Laughter, excitement and a touch of festive sparkle filled the wards as the visit brought comfort and cheer to families during a challenging time.
Sergeant Rob Froggatt from the Tameside Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“When we got the call that Santa was in trouble, we knew we couldn’t let Christmas be cancelled. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces made it all worthwhile. Whether it’s lending the big man a hand when his sleigh needs a pit stop, we are always ready to keep the festive spirit alive. So, if you hear sleigh bells and see blue lights this Christmas, don’t worry – it’s just Santa getting a little extra help from his friends in uniform.”
